The most striking thing is not what it adds, but the resistance it generates among those who have been using it for years. The new interface promises to be more intuitive, but for many veterans, changing things around doesn't exactly help.

What has changed with Audacity 4.0

The 4.0 version of Audacity, which moved from beta to official release, focuses primarily on a user interface overhaul. According to initial reviews, the new UI/UX is cleaner and easier to use, even more so than some professional programs like Cubase, although the latter are tools of another level. The comparison is inevitable: while Cubase is a professional DAW, Audacity has always been considered a tool for getting things done quickly, as some users point out. However, for quick tasks, Audacity has been the resource of many who previously pirated Sound Forge or Wavelab.

Upgrade or stick with the old version?

The debate is wide open. Some argue that the change is not drastic and that the new version is more intuitive. Others, however, prefer to keep their old versions because they are accustomed to the current layout, and any UI change represents a learning curve. The question is whether the improvement compensates for the effort of adaptation.

Will the new interface manage to convince veterans, or will the learning curve be too steep for a tool that has always been characterized by its simplicity?
