As the author of The Reset, I think it’s time for me and my friends to weigh in on how we see the event progressing so far and the performance by the authorities and the general population:
The unofficial leadership have performed quite well concerning international coordination of the Lockdown though there appears to be a lack of definitive direction by the official leadership in some nations, namely the U.S. and UK.
The politicians can’t be blamed overly much since the pandemic, and associated trade and financial volatility, was such a surprise. The general population in Asia, Australia and Europe have performed well, though idealogical opportunists and extremists have used the turmoil to stoke violence and lawlessness in some parts of the West. Such deviants will need to be identified by the military authorities.
It’s important that the official leadership inform the population that we have entered a period of systemic instability and their way of living must temporarily discontinue. They must learn to accept that policies similar to the Lockdown they just experienced may have to be prolonged and formalized; as such, let’s examine the historical record of Lockdowns as official policy so we may divine the best approach. Why, when and how can they work well? It’s best we answer these questions now so no unnecessary suffering or hardship is experienced and the politicians and generals attain a mental grasp of such affairs.
Let’s begin:
Throughout history, when economic and political conditions got too tough or unruly, lockdowns took place in order to restrict people’s movement and ensure that no one who might be dangerous could be traveling away from the authorities. The ultimately goal is to ensure that only lawful behaviors is engaged in within a demarcated area; and there is no wickedness and brigandry committed by desperate and psychotic personalities.
Lockdown is a subject which is poorly understood amongst historians because they often occurred locally and did not spread; other nearby regions continued to perform commercially and culturally as per their norms, with “the outsiders” ignoring and avoiding the locked down area.
Lockdowns have worked much better amongst naturally closed off societies, like islands, i.e. Ireland, Japan and Zanzibar; or isolated cultures such as Korea, Nepal and Arabia.
Historically, people were free to travel within their own towns, which provided the bare necessities. Every Sunday, the local priest/pastor would take the roll call, and those who did not attend were considered to be fugitives and were hunted down. If one had to travel somewhere permission from the local bailiff or priest was required, and in many places such educated gentlemen performed as the government officer and representative.
