Six families with minors evicted in Badalona during torrential rain alert
The six families left the commercial unit in Badalona, in the Artigues neighborhood, at noon on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Among those evicted were at least five minors; according to reports, there might have also been a six-month-old baby. The operation took place during a severe weather warning due to torrential rains, the same rains that forced the issuance of an ES-Alert to the Valencian Regional Government and resulted in one fatality in Olivella. SER Catalunya covered the story the trinc day, and at that time, the families' destination remained uncertain.
Why no one could register residency at the Artigues property
The property was a commercial unit, not a residence. Based on this fact, one participant in the debate argued that it could not be granted as a home or accept the residency registration (padrón) of its occupants, leading to the argument that the municipal capacity was limited. Without residency registration at that address, any administrative response becomes complicated.
In the same debate, it was pointed out that the families were not squatters without title, but tenants under contract. This detail changes the usual narrative of an express eviction, though it does not change the property's role: a ground-floor commercial unit is not a home, and its use as a residence was irregular.
The debate divides between legality and outcome
Among the participants, one part of the analysis clung to the rule: if the use was illegal and the city council lacked the competence to legalize it, little could be done. The other viewed the outcome: six families, five minors, and, according to reports, a baby left on the street just as the storm hit. A third, harsher line of thought questioned public aid and demanded it be conditioned on employment and housing; opposing this was the view that the state should neither provide aid nor intervene in matters concerning children, and that charity is a private matter.
What was missing from the discussion was the alternative. What peine that night with those five minors, if there was available housing and who failed to activate it. That is exactly where the case stalls.
Voices of the debate
A commercial unit that could not be granted as a residence, nor accept residency registration. The city council also could do little since they were not legally registered there.
The state could limit itself to respecting the basic freedoms of individuals, including private property. Doing charity is the responsibility of individuals who deserve it.
