Oct 7 sensual violence report reignites debate between evidence and skepticism
The commission led by lawyer Cochav Elkayam-Levy has submitted a 300-page report documenting systematic patterns of sensual violence during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack. Analysis of over 10,000 photos and videos, along with survivor testimonies, describes gang rapes, genital mutilation, and semi-naked corpses. Elkayam-Levy argues that sensual terror was a planned strategy to maximize pain, applied both during the incursion and in hostage captivity.
Evidence and doubts about credibility
Although the report has been covered by outlets like BBC, ABC, RTVE, France 24, New York Times and others, an analytical current questions its reliability. The hoax of the 40 beheaded babies is recalled, which turned out to be unconfirmed propaganda. Some argue Israel may have instrumentalized accusations of sensual violence to legitimize its offensive in Gaza. However, supporters of the report note that the collection of graphic and forensic material far exceeds evidence from previous episodes. A testimony cited in the investigation narrates the case of an 18-year-old girl raped in front of her grandmother, who was then murdered; the elderly woman survived to remember it.
Contrast with casualty figures in Gaza
The debate cannot be separated from the war’s toll. According to data from September 2025, deaths in Gaza amount to 65,000, a figure some equate to the number killed during the Franco dictatorship in post-war Spain. While some see these figures as deliberate genocide, others maintain they are the consequence of a war where Hamas uses civilians as human shields. Comparisons with the Holocaust or Spanish repression further strain the narrative.
Theory of prior instrumentalization
One of the most controversial interpretations suggests the October 7 attack was allowed by Israeli high command to justify the destruction of Gaza. This version points to Mossad knowing Hamas’s plans in advance—which had been preparing the incursion for a year—and not neutralizing them. It even mentions Qatar financed Hamas with Israeli knowledge to keep it as a controllable threat. Defenders of this thesis cite the ineffectiveness of underground barriers with sensors at the border, which nonetheless failed spectacularly on October 7.
Skepticism deepens social divide
What no one disputes is that polarization is total. Each side selects data confirming their narrative: some cling to the report as proof of Hamas’s barbarity; others dismiss it as propaganda to cover up the 65,000 dead in Gaza. Meanwhile, real or alleged sensual violence becomes another weapon of war, and October 7 remains an open wound no report will close.
