Murcia deploys 1.330 cameras to strengthen municipal video surveillance

The Ayuntamiento de Murcia (Murcia City Council) has begun installing 1.330 new video surveillance cameras, a project that seeks to quadruple the existing network and reach a total of 1.879 devices. The initiative, part of the "Murcia Segura" plan, aims to expand preventive surveillance capacity in public spaces and provide the Policía Local (Local Police) with an additional tool to improve response to incidents.

The rollout has begun in the El Carmen neighborhood, with equipment installed in the Jardín Pintor Pedro Flores and in the vicinity of the Centro Municipal. It will later extend to other areas such as Los Ramos park. The goal is a balanced distribution between neighborhoods and pedanías (outlying districts), adapting to the specific characteristics of each area.

Technology and capabilities of the new cameras

The first devices installed are bullet-type cameras with CMOS sensors and 4-megapixel resolution. They incorporate infrared technology and can capture high-definition images even in low-light conditions, thus ensuring operability at night. The Ayuntamiento stresses that these devices support police work and are integrated into a broader municipal architecture.

The expansion of the camera network adds to other recent technological initiatives by the Ayuntamiento, such as the introduction of 24 body-worn recording devices for the Policía Local and a smart capacity-control system in the plazas de abastos (market halls), which uses 25 video sensors to monitor occupancy in real time.

Data protection and signage

Given the considerable increase in video surveillance infrastructure, the Ayuntamiento assures that the system complies with personal data protection regulations. Camera locations will be properly signposted, informing people of their presence and purpose. Image lifecycle management, access controls, and communications security are key aspects of this large-scale project.

Reactions to this measure reflect a social debate about privacy and the effectiveness of video surveillance. While some participants express concern about a possible "concentration camp" and an invasion of freedom, others question the real purpose of the installation, suggesting it may not be merely crime prevention. The doubt is raised as to whether these measures really contribute to public safety or whether they respond to other agendas.
