The list of best buys on AliExpress favored by Spanish shoppers is hardly segarro: they are tools, spare parts, and gadgets that pay for themselves in two uses. And for now, they survive the fiscal blow threatening to make any small order more expensive.

The July 1st VAT and the 22-euro War

The circulating date is clear: July 1st. From then on, VAT will also apply to packages that previously slipped under 22 euros. Until now, an order below that threshold entered without paying; with the change, the buyer pays no matter what. The question is whether the price really goes up or if the seller absorbs the tax to maintain volume. Some argue that most products are already overpriced and that applying VAT will barely make a difference.

There's a second toll that's more annoying than the tax: the processing fee. Correos, through Adtpostales, charges about 9 euros for customs processing—a fee previously noted as 5.88 plus VAT. For a five-euro spare part, this fixed fee makes the purchase absurd. Anyone who has to go through this might as well think twice.

The most optimistic counterpoint suggests that many sellers already operate from European warehouses, even in Madrid, with deliveries in less than ten days and without going through customs. If this model becomes widespread, stock moves as merchandise, not individual purchases, and the fiscal blow loses its edge.

Tools and Spare Parts: Where Savings Are Real

The bulk of the best purchases fall into a not-so-epic category: spare parts that cost an arm and a leg in Spain. Replacing the screen of a broken Kindle 3 for around 20 euros, when they asked for almost the price of a new Kindle just for the part here, is the perfect example. Add the demagnetizer—which has revived three quartz watches that got stuck when changing the battery for less than 10 euros—or the precision screwdriver set that half the world points to as the most profitable purchase.

The mirror film for windows (7.36 euros) blocks the sun and lowers a room's temperature in summer. The power cable with a switch (1.98) turns off a monitor without bending down to unplug it. And the beard apron, at 1.88, prevents the bathroom from getting messy with hair after electric shaving.

NAS Drives, Xeons, and N100 Boards: Where Savings Reach 50%

Hardware is another story. NAS hard drives purchased from stores with reliable ratings are up to 50% cheaper than in Europe, provided the serial number is verified on the manufacturer's website. A Xeon for LGA 1150, equivalent to a fourth-generation i7, costs half as much. And boards with an Intel N100 processor are among the top-rated purchases: turning a slow computer into something decent for browsing for less than the cost of a supermarket laptop.

Watch out for traps. A laser level and a paint sprayer from the same brand were sold for 50.33 and 51.58 euros with notable reviews, but the same list includes a recurring warning: the digital peephole that promised two megapixels and delivers one. It's advisable to read the fine print before trusting the storefront.

The Five-Euro Gadget and Other Rarities

There's the manual pressure dental irrigator for 4 or 5 euros, which is charged by pumping ten times and removes debris left behind by the brush. There's the 40-inch TV for 106. And there's the experiment nobody asked for: a pheromone cologne for 13 euros bought to test if the marketing was true. The home verdict was unencouraging.

The complete calculation, item by item, is what turns a list of whims into a real buying guide. The question is no longer whether these things are worth it. It's how long it will take them to find a way to make even that last entry go through customs.
