China’s move boosts Wall Street stocks

US stocks rallied strongly on their open on Monday as China’s decision to allow a more flexible yuan boosted hopes for a strong global recovery.
Less than an hour after the opening bell, the S&P 500 was up 1.1 per cent at 1,129.30, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.2 per cent to 10,577.38 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1 per cent to 2,333.73.

US-listed shares in BP dropped 3.6 per cent to $30.62 . An internal BP document estimates that a worst-case scenario rate for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill could be about 100,000 barrels per day, far exceeding the current government estimate.
Anadarko Petroleum rose 0.7 per cent to $42.87 on the first trading day after Moody’s cut its debt rating to ‘junk’ status. The company, which holds a 25 per stake in the leaking well, accused accused BP of “gross negligence or willful misconduct” leading up to the explosion on the well that set off the leak.
Time Warner, owner of cable networks including CNN amongst others, was up 1.2 per cent to $33.35 after reports that it is buying London-listed Shed Media Plc, a UK television producer that made shows such as ‘Supernanny’, in a transaction expected to be worth around 75m pounds ($111m). It is expected to be announced this week.
Walt Disney gained 1.3 per cent to $35.60 after ‘Toy Story 3’, its latest release, topped US and Canadian box offices with $109m in ticket sales recorded in its opening weekend, a record opening for its Pixar studio, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold was 5.8 per cent higher to $69.69 as the price of copper rallied. Southern Copper Corp rallied 5.9 per cent to $32.12.
Valeant Pharmaceuticals International climbed 2.2 per cent to $46.88 as the drugmaker agreed to merge with Biovail Corp, Canada’s biggest publicly traded drugmaker.
Valeant stockholders will get a one-time special cash dividend of $16.77 per share and 1.7809 shares of Biovail common stock in exchange for each share of Valeant common stock they own.
Goldman Sachs advanced 0.6 per cent to $138.94 as the Securities and Exchange Commission was reported to have agreed to give the bank more time to file a response to the agency’s fraud lawsuit filed in April.
