Mar Menor algae antiestéticar

Turbid waters at Playa de la Mota in the Mar Menor in May 2016
Five different species of algae are growing rapidly in the Mar Menor due to the high content of nitrates and chemicals from farm run-off over many years into the sea.
According to water tests and a scientific report issued on Wednesday some are considered toxic and release toxins damaging sealife.

Contents of nitrogen, ammonium, phosphorus, pesticides and heavy metals, in a salt marsh in the coast of the Mar Menor Lagoon (SE Spain)
Abstract
Different types of pollutants were studied for one year in soils and waters of a coastal salt marsh (the Marina del Carmolí) of the Mar Menor lagoon (SE Spain). Strongly eutrophicated water with high concentrations of phosphorus (12.3 mg L-1 maximum), ammonium (31.1 mg L-1 maximum) and nitrates (281.9 mg NO3- L-1 maximum) was found in the watercourses flowing into the salt marsh. The contents of these three nutrients in the water within the salt marsh decreased towards the shoreline, hence indicating that the water is depurated as it flows across the marsh. Pesticides were not detected in the samples analyzed. The soils of a sector of the salt marsh were extremely contaminated by Pb (15170 mg kg-1 maximum), Mn (10247 mg kg-1 maximum), Zn (63140 mg kg-1 maximum), As (812 mg kg-1 maximum) and Cd (105 mg kg-1 maximum). A tendency of metal contents to decrease towards the coastline was observed, hence indicating that the salt marsh acts as a barrier reducing the transport of polluted sediments into the Mar Menor lagoon. However, the high concentrations of labile (soluble + exchangeable) Pb, Mn, Zn and Cd extracted from the soils and the presence of soluble Mn and Zn in the soil solution water indicated risks for metals of being transferred to biotic networks. In summary, the salt marsh studied can be considered a sink of pollutants contributing to preserve the environmental quality of the Mar Menor lagoon. However, an inadequate management strategy may lead the salt marsh to become a source of contamination.
