The euro hit a fresh record high against the yen on Wednesday after Jean-Claude Trichet, European Central Bank president, was more hawkish on inflation than expected.
The central bank chief’s comments raised the prospect of further eurozone interest rate increases next year.
Speaking to the European Parliament, Mr Trichet said eurozone inflation would likely rise again in 2007. He said that continued strong monetary and credit growth in an environment of ample liquidity pointed to “upside risks for price stability over the medium to long term”.
”Mr Trichet sounded particularly hawkish,” said Marc Chandler at Brown Brothers Harriman. “There is little doubt that the ECB has signaled that its tightening cycle has not been completed.”
