Alwaleed Foundation backs vaccine summit


Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation-Global, chaired by Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, has signed an agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation co-chaired by Bill Gates to bolster the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Lebanon-registered Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation has pledged $30 million for the initiative.

The organisation had earlier supported the first Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi, which was held in partnership with General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and in partnership with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Bill Gates.

The summit was attended by Prince Alwaleed along with global leaders, health and development experts, philanthropists, and business leaders.

Prince Alwaleed acknowledged the unique partnership between the Alwaleed Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the aim of ending polio through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The commitment was made at Reaching the Last Mile forum in Abu Dhabi, hosted by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
Alwaleed Philanthropies’ donation of $2 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) will support the creation of action plans to expand access to polio vaccination and help reach children everywhere.

I want to share with you my excitement over the outcomes of the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi to celebrate the huge progress we’ve made toward ending polio and protecting all children with life-saving vaccines. The Summit was a big success.

World leaders including health and political ministers from Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan, EU President Jose Manuel Barroso and former UNSG Kofi Annan appeared alongside polio survivors and vaccine heroes like Ade Adepitan, a British Paralympic medalist who contracted polio as a child in Nigeria, and Sikha Patra and Salim Shekh, two kids from India who organize polio immunizations for their community in Calcutta.
We had an amazing cross-section of participants, including community leaders like the Sultan of Sokoto from Nigeria and Rotarian Deepak Kapur from India, industry representatives, and leaders from our organizing partners UNICEF, GAVI, WHO and GPEI. Although he couldn’t attend, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a polio survivor, also added his voice to the gathering.
We were also in Abu Dhabi to have some frank discussions on what still needs to be done to reach our ambitious goals.
And I’m proud to say that collectively, we changed history. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative rolled out a new strategy to achieve a polio-free world by 2018. Global leaders demonstrated their confidence in the six-year plan by pledging their financial and political commitments to help ensure its success.
In all, we raised a total of $4 billion dollars. That’s close to three-quarters of the plan’s projected $5.5 billion cost over six years, and enough to protect more than one billion children from polio forever.

Countries like Norway, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and the UK made generous pledges, as did His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The $4 billion also includes $335 million from private philanthropists such as Carlos Slim, His Royal Highness Alwaleed Bin Talal, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The foundation stepped in with $1.8 billion, a third of what’s needed for the polio campaign.

The Summit pledges are a huge step towards a fully funded plan, and I hope that financing won’t be the thing that stands in the way of achieving the miracle of polio eradication.

Collectively, we sent a powerful message that the world remains committed to fulfilling the vision of the Decade of Vaccines to end polio and reach all children, no matter where they live, with the vaccines they need.​

General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces received yesterday at Al Etihad Towers Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed said the UAE, under the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, always seeks to boost its efforts and contributions in easing the suffering of the needy people in different parts of the world by directly supporting and getting engaged in humanitarian initiatives in affected countries.

Sheikh Mohamed discussed with Gates topics and activities of the Global Vaccine Summit, currently taking place in Abu Dhabi. The meeting also touched on the efforts by international organsations, as well as government and non-government organisations, to eradicate polio by 2018.​

Remdesivir, the investigational drug for the treatment of the cobi19 disease 2019 (el bichito-19), will be sold for $390 per vial, according to an open letter from Daniel O’Day, chairman and CEO of Gilead Sciences. Because most patients are expected to receive a 5-day treatment course using 6 vials, this equates to approximately $2340 per patient.1

Furthermore, the letter noted that because of the discounts expected by government health care programs, the price for private insurance companies will be $520 per vial,1 resulting in an estimated $3120 for a typical US patient.2

According to the letter, remdesivir is the first antiviral to demonstrate patient improvement in clinical trials for el bichito-19, and the pricing of the drug has been a major concern.

“There is no playbook for how to price a new medicine in a pandemic,” O’Day said in the letter.1

In a study of 53 patients who received a 10-day course of remdesivir, 68% showed a clinical improvement.

A total of 23% experienced serious adverse effects (AEs)

including acute kidney injury
hypotension,



multiple organ dysfunction syndrome
and septic shock.1

In normal circumstances, O’Day said drugs would be priced according to the value they provide. He pointed out that early research showed that remdesivir shortened el bichito-19 recovery time by 4 days on average, resulting in an estimated savings of $12,000 per patient. These savings could provide major benefits both to the overall health care system and patients individually.1

According to the letter, $390 per vial is well below that value.1

“Part of the intent behind our decision was to remove the need for country by country negotiations on price,” O’Day wrote. “We discounted the price to a level that is affordable for developed countries with the lowest purchasing power.”1

In an interview with CNBC, O’Day said the company expects to see an exponential increase in supply starting in September, resulting in a total of 2 million treatment courses available by the end of the year.2 The US Department of Health and Human Services will continue to manage allocations of the drug to hospitals until the end of September, when supplies are expected to be less constrained.1

De mayor quiero ser una empresa farmacéutica, que esté intentando desarrollar una banderilla para la el bichito-19 en medio de un asunto como el del cobi19. Son todo ventajas. El miedo es libre, todos los sentimos pues es algo natural, un mecanismo de reacción ante los peligros que hemos desarrollado. Y el miedo en una esa época en el 2020 de la que yo le hablo es un gran agitador de los mercados. Si no que se lo digan a la compañía farmacéutica AstraZeneca (AZ).
La Comisión Europea (el Gobierno de los europeos) va a adelantar dinero a empresas farmacéuticas para «tener acceso preferente a las dosis de la banderilla»… ¡sin haber banderilla! La Comisión Europea admite incluso que hay riesgo de que las investigaciones financiadas acaben fracasando.
Una banderilla y cualquier medicamento tarda y son datos del principal lobby de las farmacéuticas en España, Farmaindustria, unos 14 o 15 años en desarrollarse y sólo uno de cada 10.000 compuestos llegan finalmente al mercado. Fabricar una banderilla no es cosa de ponerse unos meses a investigar y ya está. La posibilidad de que no se encuentre lo que se busca -o de que el resultado no tenga la suficiente eficacia y seguridad- es muy muy alta. Y cuantas más prisas peor.
Una banderilla en esta situación es además un instrumento clave: si se logra un producto muy muy efectivo y muy muy seguro y se consigue convencer a mucha mucha gente de que se vacune, la economía no para o no se para tanto. La Unión Europea se creó para configurar un mercado único (los intereses de las personas vienen después). Y esto es una cuestión económica: Si existe siquiera la posibilidad de que una inyección pueda ayudar a que la economía recupere la «normalidad» lo antes posible ¿cuánto nos cuesta?
Desde que apareció el nuevo cobi19 en la ciudad china de Wuhan se han presentado 125 candidatos a banderilla y diez de ellos ya se están probando en humanos en EE UU, China, Alemania y Reino Unido. Se trata de la mayor operación económica en el ámbito sanitario de la historia. Todos los humanos del planeta son candidatos potenciales a usar el producto.
En este contexto apareció la semana pasada la noticia de que Alemania, Francia, Italia y los Países Bajos firmaron un acuerdo con el grupo farmacéutico AstraZeneca para hacerse con 300 millones de dosis de una futura banderilla. El paso no fue bien recibido por todos porque «la colaboración en el seno de la UE significa que hay colaborar con tantos Estados miembros como sea posible, sin negociar aparte con ciertos países».

Es importante conocer también qué criterios se aplican a la hora de dar dinero los estados y a quién. No es lo mismo dar dinero a una empresa con un claro compromiso social, que tenga un historial de servicio a la población, que a una empresa corrupta.
Escribimos esto porque en el Bufete Almodóvar & Jara llevamos un caso de una muerte que se produjo durante un ensayo clínico de esta empresa en el hospital de Mérida.
Astrazeneca es la misma empresa que no quiere indemnizar cuando se producen muertes durante sus ensayos (esperemos que esto no ocurra en el caso de su banderilla). Que oculta información a un juzgado civil. Y que hace que la familia del fallecido tenga que litigar durante años por sus derechos en relación a una indemnización por parte del seguro del ensayo clínico, tal y como marca la ley.
La información de los ensayos clínicos, se ha demostrado durante el proceso, es controlada al 100% por AstraZeneca. Igualmente, AZ entiende que no es necesario realizar una autopsia y que el paciente, enfermo de lupus, murió por otra causa distinta que el medicamento sifalimumab que se probaba con él. Sin embargo, hay informes técnicos del Comité de ética de investigación de Badajoz que demuestran que el ensayo tenía deficiencias (esperemos que estas no estén ocurriendo en el caso de la banderilla).
El paciente, recordemos, fallece de la misma sintomatología que otros cinco enfermos que también fallecieron durante el ensayo. Más tarde, AZ suspendió el análisis clínico… aunque mantiene a la familia en los juzgados luchando por sus derechos. ¿A esta empresa la UE le va a dar fondos para desarrollar la banderilla de la el bichito?
A tenor de la actuación de AZ en este caso que en nuestro bufete conocemos muy bien podemos suponer que la transparencia en la financiación por los estados de esa banderilla va a ser nula y en otros casos (ver sanciones a AZ en USA).
Estos días estamos defendiendo ante el Tribunal Supremo de España el derecho de una familia de un enfermo que fallece durante un ensayo en circunstancias no claras y que potencialmente se puede atribuir a su participación en el ensayo.
No hubo autopsia porque no interesó. La empresa farmacéutica ha contratado al despacho Garrigues, conocido por su buena relación con determinados jueces que participan en sus congresos y conferencias.
La defensa de AZ ha contratado a expertos para decir que el paciente no falleció por el fármaco en investigación, ni por acudir en largas sesiones al hospital de manera periódica. Niegan y convencen al juez de que no es necesario que testifiquen miembros del comité ético de Extremadura y catedráticos de Universidad, quienes mantienen que el paciente debiera ser reconocido en sus derechos.
Estas empresas son las que aspiran a sacar la banderilla contra la el bichito y a donde van a ir fondos europeos para financiar dicho producto.
