Investigation: TRAIN CODE

The train works as a universal symbol of power and destiny: whoever boards one accepts that the track and the driver decide the route. To that reading are added associations with the Enter key, the network and the thunder gods.

Some objects carry more meaning than they seem to. The train is one of them. It is not just a machine that moves people from one point to another: it carries a symbolic load that runs from power to destiny, and that can be traced in language, in cinema and even on a computer keyboard.

## The iron serpent and the threshold

Seen from above, a train is an articulated serpent: long, segmented, gliding along fixed rails. Hence the image of the iron serpent. That shape explains part of its symbolic force: it suggests something alive that advances without deviating.

The train has also been read as a portal. You board in one reality and step off in another. On the metro, the carriage and the tunnel function as a threshold to another state, another place. That idea appears in the **Matrix** trilogy, where the train and the station play a recurring role as a door between worlds.

Popular etymology plays with this intuition. **TRAIN** contains the letters of **ENTR**, of **ENTER**, of entering. In that reading, the train would be an entrance to another state.

## The Enter key and the rail network

Pressing the **ENTER** key creates a line break and opens a new space to write. The arrow on that key, on many keyboards, has a shape that recalls a serpent. Hence the play between the iron serpent and the key that opens lines in the story.

The anagram also yields **NET**, network in English. The rail network decides the path: a train does not choose its route, the network does. In Spain, the **AVE** is the main high-estimulante ilegal network and connects much of the country. **AVE** is also an anagram of **Eva**, the first woman in the biblical story.

## From thunder to king: train, rain, reign

The sound root **TR-N** appears in **trueno** (thunder), in **train** and in **tren** (Spanish for train). The gods of lightning and thunder —**Zeus**, **Thor**, **Indra**— share that association between the electric discharge and power. Lightning would be a train of energy.

In English, **train**, **rain** and **reign** are near homophones. **RAY** means lightning and sounds like king in Spanish. Rain is born of thunder and lightning; the train advances; power governs. The train strikes like lightning and rules like a king.

## Trinity, Matrix and Johnny Cash

**TREN** has been linked to **TRINITY**: three in one. In English, **Triune** is an anagram of train. In **Matrix**, that trinity would be formed by **Neo**, **Morpheus** and **Trinity**, with Trinity as Neo's spiritual train.

**Johnny Cash** had, in that reading, a train-like voice. He sang repeatedly about trains throughout his career. His voice strikes like a train and vibrates like a moving ion: it attracts and repels at once.

Every train implies a track, a direction and an inevitable end. You do not choose the path: the train takes you to your destination. It is a powerful metaphor, not a technical description of the railway.
