December Headline: Kotlin and C candidates for programming language of the year

The programming languages Kotlin and C seem to be the only candidates to become programming language of the year 2017. TIOBE will announce the winner of this award next month. Thanks to the boost of small software devices and the increase of low level software in the automotive industry, the C programming language gained a lot of popularity in 2017. C is one of the oldest programming languages alive. Its main competitor for the award, Kotlin, is relatively new. It was released in 2011 by JetBrains. Kotlin is a language that can run on a Java VM and has become popular because it has been accepted as an official Android language.

The TIOBE Programming Community index is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. Popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings. January Headline: Programming Language C awarded Language of the Year 2017
Surprise, surprise, oldtimer language C appears to be the fastest grower of 2017 in the TIOBE index and thus is declared programming language of the year. The C language gained 1.69% in 2017. Usually this is not sufficient to become language of the year, so C has actually won because there were no outstanding alternatives. Runner ups are Python (+1.21%) and Erlang (+0.98%). Despite all this, it is remarkable to see that C is getting more popular after a steep downward trend that started at the end of 2015. C had a rating of more than 17% at that time and lost more than 10% after that in the next 18 months. A possible reason for this revival is that C is very popular in the growing manufacturing and machine industry (including the automotive market). The most interesting jumps forward in the TIOBE index in 2017 were R (from 16 to 8), Erlang (from 44 to 23) and Kotlin (from 89 to 39). Promising languages such as Julia, Hack, Rust and Kotlin were not able to hit the top 20 or even the top 30.

Pues parece ser que han metido SQL en la lista, al pasar a considerarlo un lenguaje de programación. La sorpresa de este mes es que parece que repuntan los Visual Basic.

If you look closely at this month's publication, Visual Basic.NET and classic Visual Basic are doing great. This is really surprising. About 2 years ago we stated in an interview about the TIOBE index that it was a matter of some years before Visual Basic would have disappeared. Visual Basic is considered the programming language for newbies in the field of programming and rapid prototyping. That's why it has a bad image among expert programmers. Despite all this, Visual Basic seems to survive. Last week Mads Torgersen of Microsoft announced that they will stop with the co-evolution strategy of C# and Visual Basic. This means that Visual Basic will fall behind if compared to new C# antiestéticatures. Let's see whether Visual Basic can take this new punch and keep on surviving.

IMPORTANT NOTE. SQL has been added again to the TIOBE index since February 2018. The reason for this is that SQL appears to be Turing complete. As a consequence, there is no recent history for the language and thus it might seem the SQL language is rising very fast. This is not the case.

Una encuestilla para saber la opinión de los conforeros programadores.

Ya sé, ya sé. Me vendrán con que eso depende de qué vayas a programar, el contexto, la eficiencia requerida y etc. Pero con cuál se sienten más cómodos.

En mi caso, me siento más cómodo en javascript y python. Repruebo PHP. Amo C++ pero no es muy práctico. Java me resulta confuso. Ensamblador es poco práctico y sólo lo embebo en C para algunas cosas. Fortran parece anclado en los 70.

Javascript es muy bueno, pero me acoplo más a PHP.
Excelentes herramientas.

April Headline: Perl is having a hard time

At the moment there are 2 programming languages in the top 20 that have lost more than 3 positions in 1 year's time: Objective-C and Perl. The reason for the fall of Objective-C is clear. Apple abadoned Objective-C a couple of years ago and replaced it by its successor Swift. Moreover, mobile app development is moving to platform independent languages and frameworks, so even Swift, which is only available on Apple's systems, has a hard time. But what about Perl? Till 2005 it was the most dominating scripting language in the world. In 2008 we said in an interview with Dr. Dobb's Journal that Perl would go extinct based on the trend we saw in the TIOBE index at that time. After this a religious war started with Perl diehards who claimed that this won't happen and that the TIOBE index was being gamed. Stevan Little gave a ground-breaking talk in 2013 called "Perl is not dead, it is a dead end" indicating that once software engineers leave the Perl language they will never come back. Personally I think that the fork of Perl 6 (and its delays for decades) together with the unclear future of what was going to happen to the language was the main reason for engineers to look for alternatives such as Python and Ruby. And still today the Perl community hasn't defined a clear future, and as a consequence, it is slowly fading away.

Llevo más de 20 años programando y he llegado a la conclusión que lo que hay que hacer es usar el mejor pagado. Hay lenguajes que caen en desuso y hay pocas ofertas y mal pagadas. Otros lenguajes son demandados pero para trabajar en carnicas, empresas que pagan regular y sabes cuando entras pero no cuando sales.

Un buen programador no elige el lenguaje en el que programa. Son la aplicación y la pletaforma para las que programa las que eligen por él el lenguaje a utilizar. Si hay un lenguaje que desconoces lo que sucede es que hay aplicaciones y plataformas para las que no puedes programar. No pasa nada, te dedicas a otra cosa y en paz.

May Headline: Scala cracks top 20

Programming language Scala has finally entered the TIOBE index top 20. This has already peine some years ago for 1 month, but may be Scala is settling now for a longer time. Scala is a functional programming language that runs on Java's JVM and thus can be used together with Java or as a substitute for Java. Since it is functional, it is less verbose and it is harder to make mistakes if compared to Java. That's why Scala has a right to exist in the top 20. Apart from Scala's entrance in the top 20 we see a lot of other huge ups and downs. This has to do with Google re-indexing, which is quite volatile. For this we are going to implement compensation functions for the TIOBE index in the near future because we can't accept that Google hits are only half of the number in comparison to the previous month.

June Headline: TypeScript finally enters the TIOBE Index Top 100

This month TypeScript debuts at position 93 in the TIOBE index top 100. The Microsoft language has been tracked for a couple of years now, but although its popularity in industry seems high, it never made it to the top 100. So finally it has got sufficient traction to be noticed. TypeScript is a strict superset of JavaScript, which means you can use it together with your existing JavaScript. But it adds a lot of extra type safety to the JavaScript language thanks to type annotations. In this sense it is an improved version of JavaScript. The fact that Google adopted TypeScript next to its own JavaScript variant language Dart is proof that TypeScript has a bright future.
