Possible market reactions to US debt ceiling crisis on Monday
SYDNEY, July 31 (IFR) - If the test vote in the Senate on a Democrat plan - two hours before the markets open at 5 AM Sydney time - successfully persuades a crucial number of Republicans to back the plan, there should be a relief rally in risk assets and unwinding of some of the safe-haven strategies taken late last week. Risk currencies such as the AUD, NZD and CAD should be supported, but gains may be limited in the AUD and NZD - as they performed particularly well last week. The USD/JPY and USD/CHF should move higher, as those pairings fell hard when certain investor groups started to price in the chance of a US default. The gains may be limited until both the Senate and the House agree to raise the debt limit, as time is running out before the Aug 2 deadline set by Treasury. If the test vote is further delayed or does not get bipartisan support in the Senate - it will be a bad day for risk assets, as the chances of an unthinkable US default will increase significantly. A number of analysts have predicted that equity markets could fall between 20 and 30% if a US default was to happen. The AUD and NZD would likely fall hard, as the potential negative impact on the global economy from a US default would have investors antiestéticaring a "GFC II" when the AUD and NZD fell nearly 40% against the USD and JPY. --John.Noonan@thomsonreuters.com Copyright (c) 2011 Thomson Reuters - IFRMarkets
