Melbourne's hard-won success after a marathon lockdown
Melbourne residents have endured one of the world's longest lockdowns
Melbourne's grinding second cobi19 lockdown began in the chill of winter.
In early July, the nights were long and dark, and Australia's cultural capital was confronting the terrifying reality of another deadly wave of infections.
More than 110 days later, experts say it is emerging as a world leader in disease suppression alongside places including Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
Raina McIntyre, a biosecurity professor at the University of New South Wales' Kirby Institute, told the BBC that Australia's response had been "light years ahead" of the US and the UK.
"It is just thoroughly shocking. When we think of pandemics we don't think that well-resourced, high-income countries are going to fall apart at the seams, but that is exactly what we have seen," she said.
At the end of Tuesday, Melbourne's five million residents will see an end to strict stay-home orders that put an entire city into a type of protective custody.
When the restrictions are lifted, Melburnians will have endured one of the world's longest and toughest lockdowns.
It's been controversial, calamitous for jobs and crushingly hard for many, but health specialists believe it has worked.
There is cautious optimism that with very low case numbers, the worst is over.
Melbourne entered lockdown on July 7.

People trying to praise certain countries for their handling of the pandemic are stupid, at best.
Most of the world cannot replicate what those countries did.
And I will take them one by one :
1.Singapore. It is basically a single city country. Started the pandemic extremely aggressively, in February, closing all borders and quarantining every district when the number of cases barely went over 20.
They continue to do so even today.
2.Vietnam. Same as Singapore, but they were even more aggressive with quarantines. They still do the same, after 9 months.
3.South Korea. Shut down all schools, all factories, all malls, at the beginning of the pandemic. Most aggressive testing among big sized countries. Closed the borders. First to implement drive-thru testing.
They still continue to do the same today, aggressive testing and instant shut-downs on any cluster detected.
One common thing among the above 3 countries : their population did exactly what government asked them to do, ZERO protests against restrictions, and virtually everyone was wearing a mask since the very beginning.
We're almost in November now, and what the above 3 countries did, at the start of the pandemic, cannot be replicated.
4.New Zealand. Shut down the borders (they are still shut down for non-residents even today). Massive testing. Immediate quarantines and isolation of every damn case. They locked-down Auckland for 20 cases...
Their population abide by the rules.
All of the above 4 countries had LEVEL HEADED governments that explained and communicated extremely well on what they are facing, what they should do, and when things can go back to normal.
Cannot be replicated today.
5.Australia. Same as New Zealand, except they were slower, and this slowness forced a 111 day lock-down on Melbourne.
6. Hong Kong. Basically a Chinese-ruled city. Aggressive lock-downs since the beginning. Border shut-down. Mandatory quarantine upon entry even today.
I can add Taiwan here, even if it is not reminded by the article.
Those countries did WHAT they supposed to do, WHEN they supposed to do.
The rest of the world already passed that moment. We're in the now, not in the then.
Now, things are different. Western societies by default do not amow the rules. By default they aren't trusting the government. By default they will resist any lock-down that will be from NOW on. By default they riot and protest.
We cannot do what some EXCEPTIONAL countries, with DISCIPLINED population, and PROPER COMMUNICATIVE government did.
We're WAY past this point.
And on this note, we also can't do what Sweden did, but for other reasons.
