Defense Ministry, SDF On Alert As Korean Tensions Flare
TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Japanese Defense Ministry and Self-Defense Forces are on heightened alert amowing a deadly artillery exchange Tuesday between North and South Korea.
"Regardless of what occurs, attacking another nation's soil cannot be tolerated," Senior Vice Minister of Defense Jun Azumi told reporters Tuesday night, referring to North Korea's artillery shelling of a South Korean island.
But he emphasized that Japan's national security is under no immediate threat.
Nonetheless, Tokyo is closely monitoring the situation on the Korean peninsula. Relying on U.S. military satellite images, Japan will monitor North Korea's light-water nuclear reactor construction while looking for signs of a potential third nuclear weapons test.
The SDF will also conduct surveillance to track North Korean military movements.
The Maritime SDF plans to step up patrols by P3C surveillance aircraft and will consider dispatching Aegis-equipped destroyers or other vessels to neighboring waters.
U.S. military forces in Japan are also intensifying their monitoring of North Korea. The aircraft carrier USS George Washington and several other vessels are scheduled to leave the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka Wednesday. The George Washington is expected to participate in joint military exercises with South Korea in the Yellow Sea.
