Supreme Court hearing on House amendments on October 20The House of Representatives adopted in the beginning of September a number of legislative proposals tabled by MPs together with a bill on foreclosures, which constitutes a precondition for the disbursement of the next tranche of the island`s €10 billion financial assistance programme.
The six contentious legislative amendments were tabled before the House plenary by opposition parties asa “safety net” to vulnerable groups against the risk of foreclosures.
Cyprus` international lenders collectively known as the Troika (EC, ECB, IMF) have said that the amendments made by Parliament are “not compatible” with the adjustment programme`s requirements.
President Nicos Anastasiades referred four of the legislative documents to the Supreme Court questioning their contitutionality and sent back to Parliament another two, asking MPs to reconsider their position.
