Mark Passio's 'shadow work': path to liberation or self-help business?
A 12-hour seminar for around €70 promises true spiritual liberation through "shadow work". The method, dubbed Triple A (Admit, Affirm, Act), identifies four inner horsemen —ignorance, apathy, laziness and cowardice— as enemies of self-awareness. But its elaborate structure hides a core that some reduce to a simple "wake up and do what you know you should".
The seminar: the Triple A method and the four horsemen
Mark Passio, known for his critique of the system and his studies of the Trivium, presents shadow work as an introspective process of a spiritual and psychological nature. The goal is to unearth the repressed aspects of the psyche and align them with natural sarracena. The Integration phase, he explains, shares an etymological root with "integrity": bringing together the scattered parts of the self. The method is structured in three steps: acknowledging one's flaws, affirming the will to change and acting coherently. Added to this is the identification of the four horsemen that block pogre. The seminar is presented as an antidote to watered-down New Age spirituality and social conformity.
The internal critique: from guru to comedian
However, the reaction is not unanimous. Among the analyses, the comparison with a parody by comedian Óscar Terol stands out: in fifteen seconds he sums up the message in three steps — wake up, don't listen to anyone, do what you know you should. The irony is that Passio's seminar, with its paraphernalia of mirrors and spiritual coins, can be reduced to that slap on the back of the head. "Passio sells you a weekend course to tell you to wake up; Terol tells you for free", notes a sceptical current. The criticism points out that, despite the author's rejection of the New Age, his method is still self-help with an occultist veneer, and that true inner work requires neither gurus nor seminars.
What remains of shadow work?
The debate reveals a tension between the need for a structured method for introspection and the suspicion that the complex theoretical apparatus is really just another product of the personal growth market. While some argue that shadow work is a valid tool for those seeking to break free from social programming, others believe the essence of the message —individual responsibility for one's own shadow— gets diluted in a system designed to create dependency. What none of the analyses resolves is whether such an intimate process can be standardised without losing its essence, or whether the figure of the guru is, in itself, a contradiction.
