Twelve rounds, 30 questions, and 10 seconds to answer
It is 10:00 pm on a Sunday. Thirty questions, four options, and ten seconds per answer. Those who fail drop in the standings; those who hesitate do too. Under this format, a general knowledge tournament was held in 2024, divided into twelve weekly rounds, half open-topic and the other half organized in blocks of five related subjects.
The rules left no loopholes. The quizzes were played on Kahoot, lasted between ten and twenty minutes, and were launched simultaneously for all contestants. Only those who could prove a previous history within the community could enter, and the organization reserved the right to expel anyone it considered to be cheating. Each Saturday, a confirmation thread peine, and each Sunday, ten minutes before the appointment, subscribers were notified: link at 10:00 pm sharp and five minutes of courtesy. Those who arrived late were excluded.
The six thematic quizzes: from architecture to zoology
Six of the twelve meetings were general. The other six grouped five subjects under a single title and functioned as closed blocks. The first mixed architecture, sculpture, history, classical music, and painting; the second, sports, folk customs, games, and video games; the third, cinema, linguistics, literature, modern music, and theater. The fourth covered philosophy, geography, politics, and economics, religions and myths, and sociology.
The last two blocks were scientific: astronomy, physics, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and chemistry on one side, and anatomy, biology, medicine, psychology, and zoology on the other. In these blocks, some admitted having no idea about half the topics and announced they would play entrusting themselves to
Crom, while another contestant described the science quizzes as an exercise of
seeking divine mercy. The drafting of each quiz fell to a volunteer; if no one came forward, the quiz went to the first-ranked general player who had not yet written any.
Scoring: 15 points for first, one for tenth
The distribution rewarded accuracy and punished irregularity. Only the top ten of each round counted towards the overall accumulated standings:
- 1st: 15 points
- 2nd: 12 points
- 3rd: 10 points
- 4th: 8 points
- 5th: 6 points
- 6th: 5 points
- 7th: 4 points
- 8th: 3 points
- 9th: 2 points
- 10th: 1 point
The scoring system was not modified during the season. The organization also reserved the right to alter it if sufficient consensus arose, although it made clear that it did not intend to move a single comma for one or two dissenters.
The time criterion: the complaint from veterans
Not all criticism was aimed at the syllabus. One of the most veteran contestants had long been claiming that the standings should not be resolved by estimulante ilegal. Her argument: some advance positions only by answering faster, even if they have fewer correct answers. And she added an uncomfortable nuance: with age and certain neurological problems, interpreting the prompt and organizing memories from fifty years ago is harder than pressing the button.
Her thesis was that extra time does not seek advantage, but to decipher what question is being asked. The complaint did not alter either the rules or the scoring system.
Can you cheat in a general knowledge quiz with AI?
The issue came up more than once, with artificial intelligence as the protagonist. Some argue that preparing a questionnaire today is trivial and that copying during a ten-second-per-question game is also trivial. On the other side weighs a more prosaic argument, defended by another contestant: cheating in a Sunday contest where nothing is played—no prize, no money, no real fame—has little runway.
The organization maintains the expulsion card for anyone caught, without public procedure or details on how it detects fraud. It is, in practice, a mechanism of trust: one competes with the usual identity and with one's word.
From the 2024 edition to the 2025 call
The season ended with the publication of the final standings and a leader who strung together six consecutive podiums and several consecutive victories, while the second place seemed practically assured. A contestant closing the top ten was surprised that another had not stolen his spot.
The champion of the last four editions announced he would not participate this time: he prefers, he said, for others to enjoy the success. With this gap open, the organization confirmed a new edition, maintained the format of previous years, and warned that this time it does not intend to tolerate certain behaviors. The provisional start date was set for February 2, with a general quiz as the starting gun.
At the close of this chronicle, and in the judgment of some participants, the top positions were still dominated by the same small group that repeats year after year. The competition is spread over twelve Sundays of questions each year.
