Feijóo demands elections as doubts grow over his strategy
The leader of Spain's Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has once again urged Pedro Sánchez to call a general election. Yet skepticism is the prevailing mood among analysts, who see the demand as a gesture of weakness rather than strength. While Feijóo promises to do "everything possible" to change the government, his party is facing more than 30 judicial corruption cases, which undermines the credibility of his demand.
The impossible date: elections in July?
If Sánchez called an election today, the electoral calendar would place it on Friday 22 July or Sunday 26 July. Some analysts joke that calling it for 15 August, when the country is at a standstill, would be the best option for the PP, though it is ruled out as unfeasible. The reality is that Sánchez has no incentive to bring the election forward: the polls are not favourable to him, but the PP's erosion over the corruption cases and the energy crisis work in his favour.
Corruption and economic crisis: Feijóo's burdens
The PP is weighed down by dozens of corruption investigations, which undermines any regeneration narrative. Moreover, those who argue that Feijóo should reach the Moncloa (the Spanish prime minister's residence) warn that he would face a serious economic crisis: energy prices will not fall in the short term, and his room for manoeuvre is limited. Some even predict that, if he governed, he would not last the full four years.
The standoff gets complicated: who is in a hurry?
Feijóo seems to be in a hurry, but his own ranks do not back him. While he demands elections, social media and political analysis ridicule him. The question is whether his pressure strategy is having any effect or whether, on the contrary, it ends up benefiting a Sánchez who, for now, has no reason to make a move.
The data from the thread show a consensus of irony: nobody believes Feijóo's demand has any future. The PP's corruption and the economic uncertainty are the two great walls the Popular Party leader keeps running into.
