Gold, The Dow, and Bernanke

Mark J. Lundeen

Hi Bill,
Gold is having a bad day, and predictably the financial media is asking if the bubble in the gold market is deflating. Well before we can say if the gold bubble is “deflating,” we should first take a look at how grossly the price of gold was inflated in the first place.

The trinc chart is a comparison of the indexed values of the Dow Jones Industrials and gold, 506 weeks after the start of their bull markets. The DJIA is the red plot, gold is blue.

Gold has been in a bull market for the past ten years, or as seen in the chart above for the past 506 weeks. That seems like a long time. But the DJIA bull didn’t see its tenth year until 1992, eight years before its 2000 top. I don’t recall anyone in 1992 describing the stock market as a bubble when the Dow Jones had risen from 1.0 in August 1982 to 4.15 in Wk 506. Yet in December 2010, we are now in 506th week of being warned by financial “experts” that the price of gold is in a bubble, and beginning to “deflate.”

Let’s look at how the Dow Jones and Gold have done since January 2000.

The DJIA ends 2010 almost exactly where it began in 2000. But when inflation is taken into consideration, $11,000 doesn’t buy in 2010 what it did in 2000. With Doctor Bernanke in charge of the Fed, $11,000 will continue to lose purchasing power for the foreseeable future.

Gold on the other hand is going up, but why is it going up? Is it in a bubble, or because Doctor Bernanke is in charge of US dollar “monetary policy?” I say gold is going up because of Doctor Bernanke inflationary flows are flowing into the price of stuff, rather than into financial assets as was the case from 1982-2007.

From the time Doctor Greenspan assumed command of the Fed in August 1987, his name was intimately linked with the bull market in financial assets, as his inflationary flows flowed into financial assets. But that was then, and this is now, meaning that the Fed’s “liquidity” is now flowing into consumer prices, gold and silver; not financial assets!

It won’t be long before Doctor Bernanke’s name will be intimately linked to rising consumer prices, and soaring gold and silver, exactly as Fed Chairman, Arthur Burns is fixed in history during the 1970s.

If I’m right, and I’m sure I am, gold & silver prices have a long way to go, thanks to monetary insanity of Doctor Bernanke.
