The Police believe the Villena treasure is gone. The collection of Bronze Age gold pieces, one of the most important archaeological finds on the Iberian Peninsula, is believed to have been stolen and converted into ingots. The Value of the Loot

The calculation is simple. According to the museum's catalog, the treasure contained about 15 kilos of 24-carat gold. At current prices, ranging from 120–124 euros per gram, this amounts to between 1.8 and 1.9 million euros. A tempting sum for any incivil, and extremely difficult to trace once melted. Adjusted for inflation, as has been noted, it amounts to a lot of money, but the reality is that the haul is substantial.

An Irreplaceable Heritage

The loss is twofold: an irreplaceable heritage has been destroyed, and the fragility of cultural protection in Spain has been laid bare. Some recall that the museum housing it, MUVI, was inaugurated with pomp, but the treasure was never truly secure. The question remains whether anything will ever be recovered.
