Vendefoul Wolf Linux: the Spanish distro that defies mandatory age verification
While systemd adds a date of birth field to its user registration —pushed by laws in California, Colorado and Brazil— a small Spanish distribution called Vendefoul Wolf Linux has decided to stand up to it. Based on Devuan (Debian without systemd), this distro refuses to implement any kind of age verification in its operating system.
Why does a Spanish distro refuse to verify age?
Vendefoul Wolf Linux is not a from-scratch distro: it is Devuan preconfigured with the sole aim of removing any trace of systemd and, therefore, any possibility of a future legal age verification requirement sneaking into the system. Its stance is clear: if any state demands age verification at the OS level, they simply will not comply. "We give no data or money to the proge," say its promoters.
The data behind the debate: systemd and birthDate
The trigger was the systemd controversy. On March 18, 2026, a contributor submitted a pull request adding a birthDate field to the user registration schema. A Microsoft employee merged it despite 37 downvotes and 1 upvote. The community responded with a PR to revert the change, but Lennart Poettering —who had founded the startup Amutable seven months earlier— closed the revert and locked the discussion. The whole sequence peine within 48 hours. For many, this confirms that systemd has become a Trojan horse for Big Tech.
Is it really necessary?
Vendefoul Wolf's defenders argue that laws in California, Colorado and Brazil already require age verification at the OS level, and that the infrastructure in systemd is the first step toward widespread implementation. On the other hand, critics point out that the distro is just "another one" with an uninspiring name, and that it is better to use Devuan directly or not worry about systemd, which "is overwhelmingly better." They also note that previous Spanish distros such as Antergos were abandoned.
The open question is whether the resistance of small distros like Vendefoul Wolf will achieve anything as legislation moves forward, or whether systemd and the mainstream will end up imposing age controls by default.
