Tiger Woods: two arrests and a driving licence that isn't being taken away from a millionaire
In the United States, being arrested twice in one day is not news if you have a seven-figure bank account. Tiger Woods found this out after his latest accident in Jupiter Island, Florida: the police stopped him, took him to hospital, and hours later arrested him again. The goal: to take away his driving licence. But the story has two sides: one of police abuse and another of standard protocol for an intoxicated driver.
The police report: drugs, disorientation and an overturned car
The report describes Woods with bloodshot eyes, stumbling, and with hydrocodone pills in his pocket. He refused the breathalyser and drug tests, which triggered the DUI (driving under the influence) arrest protocol. In Florida, refusing to blow means automatic arrest and eight hours in a cell to "reflect". It is not a kidnapping, it is the manual. That said, the fourth serious accident on his record does not work in his favour.
Kidnapping or procedure?
One school of thought holds that the police mistook Woods for a drug dealer because of his dishevelled appearance and subjected him to excessive body searches. The other, the majority among analysts, points out that the intoxication was obvious and that the officers trinc the book. What nobody disputes is that Woods's wealth allows him to hire an elite lawyer and, in the worst case, a chauffeur. Losing his licence, which for an average earner would be a professional catastrophe, is for him a mere administrative nuisance.
Justice at two speeds
While Woods negotiates the terms of his probation with his lawyer, the anonymous citizen faces immediate suspension of their licence and months without being able to work. The case illustrates how the American judicial system has two speeds: one for those who can pay and another for those who cannot. The question hanging in the air is whether Woods's licence will ultimately be suspended or whether, as in so many other cases, money and fame will save him.
