Spanish man records local police officer who contacted him over paedophile hunt
A citizen who goes by the name Preicano has published a recording in which a local police officer contacts him privately after he spread content about alleged cases of paedophilia. The conversation, which Preicano recorded without the officer's knowledge, shows a visibly nervous officer who, according to the author, would have accessed his personal data through police databases in order to threaten him.
The origin of the conflict: a paedophile hunt
Preicano, known on social media for his investigations into alleged paedophiles, had published a series of videos on Instagram and YouTube in which he identified several people as possible paedophiles. Among them, according to the messages, would be a local police officer. The officer wrote to him privately telling him he didn't have the "balls" to face him, to which Preicano responded by calling him and recording the conversation. In the audio, the officer appears hesitant and, according to commenters, "terrified".
Illegal use of police databases
One of the most serious points emerging from the material is that the officer would have accessed Preicano's personal data through his force's computer systems. Several analysts point out that this constitutes the crime of uncovering and disclosing secrets, easily proven through an IT audit. "Using police databases for personal matters is extremely serious", they agree. If Preicano decides to file a complaint, the investigation could reach him by registered mail.
The debate over officers' standards
Reactions were not long in coming. While some applaud Preicano's initiative and denounce that "there are uniformed incivil out there", others criticise the low intellectual level of the officers involved and of society in general. "A bunch of chavs who should be moving pallets have a badge and are the authority", sums up one of the harshest opinions. There are also those who question the legality of Preicano's actions, but the focus is on the officer's alleged abuse of power.
A case that could escalate
As of today, no official complaint has been filed, but the material has gone viral quickly. The full video, which includes the officer's name and photo, is circulating on Instagram and YouTube. The public prosecutor's office could act ex officio given the evidence of possible misuse of police data. Meanwhile, Preicano keeps posting. The case, like so many others, highlights the tension between digital witch hunts and the real protection of minors, with the security forces themselves as part of the problem.
