Spain's Guardia Civil UCO probes PSOE illegal funding: 52 invoices under scrutiny
The Guardia Civil's Central Operative Unit (UCO, its investigative arm) has taken a firm step in its investigation into the alleged irregular funding of Spain's ruling Socialist Party (PSOE). According to information obtained by THE OBJECTIVE, the officers have asked the judge to request tax and financial information on the party and its Catalan branch, the PSC, for 2024 and 2025 from the Spanish tax agency and several banks. The move comes just as the case accumulates new evidence: at least 52 invoices paid by the PSOE and linked to the scheme involving former minister José Luis Ábalos have raised suspicions after a preliminary review of their contents.
The trail of the 52 invoices and Aldama's role
Investigators are exhaustively examining all invoices linked to members of the alleged scheme. The figure of Víctor de Aldama, identified as the alleged fixer, is gaining prominence: his predictions about judicial moves have kept coming true, which strengthens the credibility of his statements. Meanwhile, the assets of Miquel Iceta, sent to UNESCO in 2024, continue to raise unanswered questions. The PSOE's circle insists there are no irregularities, but the UCO is tightening the screws.
Judicial smoke or a real case?
Some see this investigation as a manoeuvre to divert attention from other fronts, such as the ERE or Gürtel corruption cases. But the accumulation of evidence — the suspicious invoices, Aldama's testimony, the request for banking data — suggests the UCO is not bluffing. The ball is now in the judge's court. If fake invoices are confirmed, the scandal could hit the governing party head-on.
Bottom line: If the 52 invoices hide an illegal funding scheme, the PSOE faces its biggest institutional crisis in years. But the precedents — ERE, Gürtel, the training courses case — call for caution: Spanish justice has a long tradition of cases that fizzle out. This time, however, the electoral calendar and media pressure could make the difference. We shall see whether the UCO achieves what it could not on other occasions.
