Romanians no longer see Spain as a destination: their economy has improved, but the crisis is hot on their heels
Romania's GDP per capita went from 1,700 dollars to 22,000 in just a few years. A leap some call a miracle and others a bubble. The fact is that the Romanian community in Spain has shrunk noticeably since 2022. Those who left returned home, drawn by net wages of 1,000 to 1,200 euros in factories, rents of 300 to 400 euros and a quality of life that Spain no longer offers at affordable prices. But the story has another side.
The Romanian growth that brought emigrants back home
Until 2023, the Romanian economy grew at annual rates of 4-5%. Unemployment was low —much lower than in Spain— and the cost of living was still reasonable. Entire families who had spent years in Spain did the math: with their savings and a local salary, they lived better than in Madrid or Barcelona. Romanian trade crews became scarce in Spanish cities. "You hardly see any around Madrid anymore," one observer reported. South Americans and Spaniards replaced them, in a labour market that cannot find replacements.
The perfect storm that threatens to send them back
But the mirage did not last. At the end of 2025, Romania's GDP contracted sharply. Inflation topped 10%, 10-year bonds yield 7% and the government imposed austerity measures that have doubled and tripled the prices of electricity, taxes and food. "What austerity, when we had barely started to live in prosperity?" Romanians complain. The prime minister has become a meme for his endless cuts. The crisis is so unprecedented that it threatens to send the country back to square one.
Will the trend reverse?
The available data show a paradox: while Spain keeps losing Romanian population, Romania faces a recession that could halt the return. Those who already have a home and a life built in Spain stay; the younger ones, who dreamed of a future in their homeland, hesitate. The migratory cycle, as always, is a pendulum swinging to the rhythm of the economy. Today, the scales are tipping once again.
