The covert referendum: Real Madrid's election that hides a membership reform
The election for the presidency of Real Madrid is not just a simple change of players. Beneath the surface of an electoral process that seemed necessary, a statutory reform is brewing that raises the same skepticism as the 'take it or leave it' vote on the 1978 Constitution, according to the most critical analysis.
Referendum or election?
Florentino Pérez, the 'superior being' who has steered the club for decades, called the election under cover of a low-key campaign. But the move has been interpreted as a maneuver to present a referendum on his membership reform. The paradox: members face two options that, for many, are equally unpalatable.
The candidates and the antiestéticar of change
On one side, Pérez, whose model is considered exhausted, accused of wanting to sell the club and of waste. On the other, Tebas's candidate —a name that raises suspicions—, who represents a leap into the void. The phrase going around is damning: 'Better the devil you know than the devil you don't'. The alternative generates as much or more anxiety than continuity.
Voting as resistance
There are those who vote for the other candidate just so Pérez faces opposition, not out of conviction. The tactical vote against the model, but without enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the membership reform moves forward without anyone knowing for sure what changes. The feeling of a take-it-or-leave-it deal hangs over the Bernabéu.
With these ingredients, the election looks more like an exercise in the lesser evil than healthy internal democracy. Whoever wins, loses part of their legitimacy.
