Oviedo councillor assaulted by her partner, opening a debate on gender violence
The story, published by the newspaper La Nueva España, has sparked controversy on social media and forums. A councillor on Oviedo city council, described as left-leaning, was reportedly slapped by her boyfriend, prompting a police intervention. According to the account, officers came to protect her, but some quarters criticise their response.
The two sides of the controversy
While some defend the local police's actions, others question why officers — described by one commenter as «langostazo de Canteli goons», in reference to the mayor — were deployed for a case they consider trivial. Attention has also focused on the victim's supposed ideological activism, suggesting that «pogre women» tolerate sens violence if the aggressor is «masculine». Victim blaming has been a constant throughout the debate.
No official data
There is no official confirmation from the city council or the councillor about the incident. The only source is the LNE report, which has not been denied. Nor is it known whether any restraining orders have been issued or whether the aggressor has been arrested. The absence of concrete information fuels speculation.
The paradox of reporting
It is striking that, in a context where gender violence complaints often take months to process, this incident went viral within hours. The unsettling fact: while the administration deploys resources against sens violence, society is still debating whether the victim «deserves» protection.
