This August 8, the calendar has become a magnet for numerology: the date reads 8-8-8, and that is enough for some to announce energy portals and others to expect events of great consequence. The day ended with a real fact: according to reports, Jorge Messi, father of footballer Lionel Messi, has passed away. From there, each camp found what it was looking for.

Those who believe in numerical signs recall that 17.8.17 contained an 888 and that the Barcelona attack took place that day. Skeptics point out the flaw: for August 8 of this year to be an 888, you have to add up the 26 and turn it into an eight. A trick, they say, that can validate anything. June 6, for instance, left nothing noteworthy, except the release of a pavor film.

The lion's gate and an announced death

At the other end, spiritual movements speak of the lion's gate, a supposed high-frequency window running from late July to August 12, with 8/8 as the day of greatest intensity. This year the period coincides with an eclipse, the Perseids and a planetary conjunction. All very charged, they claim; all impossible to verify, others reply. The death of Messi's father on the day of Leo's gates has been interpreted by some as an inevitable coincidence and by others as proof that prophecy is written after the fact.
