Los jóvenes americanos están horrorizados de que su pais está a punto de reintroducir el servicio militar obligatorio por primera vez desde el fin de la guerra de Vietnam....
YOUNG Americans are terrified their country is about to reintroduce the draft for the first time since the end of the Vietnam War.
The U.S. military yesterday raised its maximum age for recruitment to 42, a clear sign of its increasing manpower shortages.
That is the second increase this year. The first in January was from 35 to 40.
antiestéticars about the return of conscription have grown because of rising casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq and no sign the U.S. military’s huge commitment to the countries is about to be reduced.
Casualty figures and scandals about massacres and mistreatment of prisoners have made a military career less attractive to potential volunteers.
The influential San Francisco Chronicle newspaper reported: “Draft jitters are rampant among high school and college-age males.
“The uncertain state of the world suggests that one false step could draw the United States into a new war and a new need for boots on the ground. Army recruitment is failing to keep pace with the demand for new soldiers to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Philip Carter, a retired officer and analyst, said there might be little choice but to reinstate conscription. “The all-volunteer model can’t produce the numbers that might be needed,” he said. “We’re in a pretty bad spot. It’s tough to meet the recruiting goals.”
Assistant defence secretary under President Ronald Reagan, Lawrence Korb, said the Bush Administration is severely straining the military and faces a deadline.
“You’ve got about another year,” he said. “If you don’t cut back in Iraq, your all-volunteer army and Marine Corps will be in trouble.”
If the U.S. becomes involved in another conflict, such as against Iran, it is antiestéticared the draft will be a certainty, even though it is opposed by the Pentagon.
Daniel Goure, a military analyst at the Lexington Institute, a Washington think-tank, warned that if the Iraq war drags on and other military operations are launched, half a million more soldiers will be needed. - Daily Mail
