Corea del Norte advirtió de que cualquier acción del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU contra Pyongyang en respuesta al reciente lanzamiento de un cohete de largo alcance tendría "consecuencias firmes", según el embajador adjunto norocoreano ante la ONU, Pak Tok Hun.

Pak reiteró la versión de Pyongyang de que el cohete lanzado el pasado domingo transportaba un satélite de comunicaciones y no era una prueba encubierta de un misil balístico, como afirman algunos de sus países vecinos y las potencias occidentales.

"Todo el mundo conoce la diferencia que hay entre un misil y un satélite", aseguró el diplomático a la salida de una reunión de la Asamblea General.

Todos pueden aprovechar el espacio

Recordó que todos los países "tienen el derecho de aprovechar el espacio exterior de manera pacífica", tal como lo hacen ya un buen número de naciones, y que impedírselo a su país sería "injusto".

"Cualquier acción del Consejo de Seguridad se considerará una vulneración de nuestra soberanía y tendrá consecuencias firmes", aseguró el representante del régimen comunista norcoreano.
Sin consenso por el momento

Los cinco miembros permanentes del máximo órgano de la ONU (China, Rusia, EEUU, Francia y Reino Unido) y Japón pospusieron hasta el miércoles una segunda ronda de contactos para intentar acordar una reacción conjunta a las acciones norcoreanas.

Tokio y las potencias occidentales consideran que el lanzamiento del cohete viola la resolución 1.718 adoptada en octubre de 2006, en la que se insta a Corea del Norte a suspender las actividades relacionadas con su programa de misiles balísticos. Por ello son partidarios de adoptar una nueva resolución de condena contra el régimen norcoreano.

Sin embargo, Pekín y Moscú se oponen a cualquier medida contundente que pueda poner en peligro las negociaciones a seis bandas (EEUU, Rusia, China, Japón y las dos Coreas) sobre la seguridad en la península coreana.
Deseo de unanimidad

Por su parte, el secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, instó al Consejo de Seguridad a hablar con una sola voz en relación a la crisis desatada por el lanzamiento del cohete .

"Mi deseo es que el Consejo de Seguridad logre alcanzar una postura unificada en este asunto, lo que es muy importante", apuntó el ex ministro de Exteriores surcoreano en un encuentro con la prensa.

El cohete de largo alcance lanzado por Corea del Norte sobrevoló el espacio aéreo japonés sin causar daños y se precipitó al mar, según fuentes militares japonesas y estadounidenses. En cambio, Pyongyang asegura que alcanzó a salir de la atmósfera terrestre y que el satélite que contenía está orbitando.

Tens of Thousands in Tbilisi Demand Saakashvili Resign

Tens of thousands of Georgian opposition supporters have taken to the streets of the capital, Tbilisi, pressing for the resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Former close allies of the president addressed a large rally near Georgia's parliament Thursday as protesters rallied in the capital and in other cities.

The protesters said they are giving Mr. Saakashvili 24 hours to respond to their demands before announcing further action.

Georgia's former U.N. ambassador, Irakli Alasania, called the rally a demonstration of unity in demanding change through peaceful means.

Former parliament speaker Nino Burdjanadze apologized to the crowd for supporting the president after police used rubber bullets to break up a 2007 opposition rally.

Opposition leaders accuse Mr. Saakashvili of being authoritarian and of leading the country into a disastrous war with Russia last year.

Earlier, Mr. Saakashvili joined some opposition leaders outside parliament for a brief memorial service honoring victims of a deadly Soviet military crackdown 20 years ago Hundreds of people took part in the brief vigil to commemorate the 20 civilians killed by Soviet troops.

Two years later, on April 9, 1991, Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union following a nationwide referendum.

Georgian opposition members accused police of detaining supporters and blocking roads in an attempt to prevent people from attending Thursday's rally. Police denied the claims.

Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said police would not interfere with the protest unless lives were threatened, or if attempts were made to take over a government building.

The U.S. State Department Wednesday urged all sides to avoid violence, calling peaceful protests an important part of a democracy.

IDF planning largest-ever drill to prepare Israel for war

The Home Front Command is preparing to hold the largest exercise ever in Israeli history, scheduled to take place in about two months, in hopes of priming the populace and raising awareness of the possibility of war breaking out.

Should there be a war, Israel would have insufficient emergency and rescue response units, according to a senior Home Front Command officer.

Speaking with Haaretz, Col. Hilik Sofer, who is in charge of the Department for Population at the Home Front Command, said that "in wartime there will be insufficient Magen David Adom, rescue and chemical and biological warfare units. Even if we call up the reserves of the Home Front Command, we will have to rely on the population itself."

"We need to train for a reality in which during war missiles can fall on any part of the country without warning," he said.

The Home Front Command is hoping to convince the population that in a future war the entire country can become a front without warning.

The aim of the nationwide drill, Sofer said, "is to transform the population from a passive to an active one. We want the citizens to understand that war can happen tomorrow morning."

The exercise is scheduled to last an entire week and test a series of scenarios that include missile strikes with conventional and non-conventional warheads, fired by Hezbollah, Syria or Hamas.

Sofer emphasized that in time of war the citizens will be required to mostly rely on themselves. In emergency situations, the policy of the Israel Defense Forces and the Defense Ministry is not to carry out mass evacuations of civilians, even in areas that are close to the border with territory controlled by Hezbollah and Hamas.

Officers in the Home Front Command insist that they are not trying to scare anyone beyond a "healthy sense of fear," according to Sofer. In an effort to blunt the severity of the message, the command has prepared an information campaign that is based on questions of children. Taliban peace deal off, Pak lurches towards civil war

New Delhi: Pakistan is lurching towards an all out civil war with the Swat peace deal with pro-Taliban groups unravelling less than two months after it was signed.

Pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Sufi Mohammad is reported to be winding up his efforts to get the Taliban on the peace wagon. He claims the government has betrayed them.

TNSM spokesman Amir Issat says, "No Qazis have been appointed, Darul Qaza and Nizam-e-Adl have not been implemented."

Meanwhile, Malakand Commissioner Syed Mohammad Javed says, "The work is on and we are implementing Sharia law and courts."

Sufi Mohammad says the peace camps are now turning into protest camps and the government fears the worst. Provincial leaders in Peshawar have warned of suicide attacks on police and the secular courts.

New battlelines are being drawn and reports filtering in from the tribal areas says the Taliban are abandoning sanctuaries there in the face of repeated drone attacks.

They are now moving into urban areas. Suicide squads are regrouping in cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi and scores of smaller towns like Buner.

Buner is just 100 km north of Islamabad. The Taliban tried to capture it on Wednesday and failed but are expected to return in full force soon. Pakistani Taliban leader Beitullah Mehsud says he authorised the attack on Buner, while another Taliban leader Maulvi Nazir based in Waziristan says they have enough fighters under their command to march on Islamabad.

Fiji military occupies central bank, governor dismissed

SUVA - The governor of Fiji’s central bank was dismissed Tuesday and the military has taken over the building, a senior bank official told AFP.

In the latest upheaval to hit the island nation, Reserve Bank of Fiji governor Savenaca Narube was told to vacate his office because his appointment was constitutional and Fiji no longer has a constitution, the official said on condition of anonymity.

President Josefa Iloilo scrapped the constitution on Friday to bypass an Appeal Court ruling that prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama had been in power illegally since the 2006 coup he led.

He also sacked all judges and judiciary officials before reappointing military chief Bainimarama and his cabinet for five more years.

There was no official confirmation of Narube’s dismissal, but a statement from the central bank, that exchange controls had been tightened, was issued in the name of deputy governor Sada Reddy.

The deputy governor is not a constitutional appointment.

The Reserve Bank of Fiji is in the same building as the New Zealand High Commission (embassy) office, and a spokesman for the New Zealand foreign ministry said the commission staff were not under any threat.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully said soldiers had entered the building and ‘people coming and going are being checked.’

Earlier Tuesday, McCully raised the possibility of travel and trade bans on Fiji, and said people should think twice about visiting the popular South Pacific holiday destination.

New Zealand has condemned the latest upheaval in Fiji where courts and the public prosecutions office remained closed Tuesday because there was no one to staff them on the first working day after the Easter holiday break.

The Fiji Human Rights Commission was also shut because it was an office appointed under the constitution.

Under emergency regulations, the Fijian media is under orders only to publish positive stories about the political situation or risk being shut down, while foreign journalists face deportation.
