The population of Europe Union has increase by 100million in half a century, new figures showed today.

Since 1960, the number of people in the 28 member states has soared by a quarter to 507million.

With much of the EU still in the grip of the Eurozone crisis, with unemployment remaining stubbornly high, the report also showed how people are moving around the continent, many in search of work.

n the last year the population of the EU has increased by 1.74million, including a rise of 403,000 in the UK.

In the UK there were 782,000 births and 576,500 deaths, increasing the population overall by 205,600 from January 2013 to January this year.

The number of people arriving in the UK was also 212,000 higher than the number who left.

The latest figures have been released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical arm.

In 2013 there were 5.1million babies born in the EU and 5million deaths. The death rate was highest in Bulgaria, Latvia and Lithuania at around 14 per cent, and lowest in Cyprus (6 per cent), Ireland (6.5 per cent) and Luxembourg (7 per cent).

The birth rate was highest in Ireland (15 per cent), France (12.3 per cent) and the UK (12.2 per cent).

Portugal has the lowest birth rate at 7.9 per cent, followed by Germany, Greece and Italy, all at 8.5 per cent.

Overall, the population increased in 15 member states and fell in the other 13.

The UK population increased by 0.6 per cent last year, behind Luxembourg, Italy, Malta, Sweden and Austria.

Net migration surged by 19 per cent in Luxembourg and 7.6 per cent in Sweden, compared to 3.3 per cent in the UK.

However countries in the Mediterranean, hit hardest by the 2008 financial crash and the Eurozone crisis, have seen people leaving in their droves.

For example, net migration fell by 13.9 per cent in Cyprus, 5.5 per cent in Spain and 4.7 per cent in Greece.
