| Greek poll shows anti-bailout leftists leading | Reuters Greek poll shows anti-bailout leftists leading ATHENS | Thu May 10, 2012 2:24pm EDT (Reuters) - The leftist anti-bailout SYRIZA party has gained support since an inconclusive election on Sunday to become Greece's most popular party, the first opinion poll to be published after the vote showed on Thursday. Backing for SYRIZA stood at 23.8 percent of respondents, with the pro-bailout conservative New Democracy trailing at 17.4 percent, according to the survey conducted on May 8-9 by polling firm Marc for the Alpha television station. The May 6 election left pro- and anti-bailout parties almost evenly divided and deadlocked over how to form a government. Stripping out undecided voters to make the poll's figures comparable with actual election results, SYRIZA would win a repeat vote with 27.7 percent, the polls said, up from the 16.8 percent the party scored in Sunday's election. New Democracy would slip to second place with 20.3 percent of the vote compared with the 18.9 percent it won on May 6. The pro-bailout Socialist PASOK remains in third place with 12.6 percent. Almost two in three voters wanted party leaders to form a coalition government, according to the Marc/Alpha survey.

![]() ![]() |

| Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras, has addressed a letter to Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, European Council president Herman Van Rompuy and European Parliament president Martin Schulz, stressing that the vote of the Greek people delegalises the memorandum politically, which failed in achieving the aims it had set, as well as that a reconsideration of European strategy is necessary. The letter was communicated to European Central Bank president Mario Draghi and Eurogroup president Jean-Claude Juncker. Tsipras added that due to the policies of the memorandum of understanding Greece is the only European country in peacetime which in 2012 is going through the fifth consecutive year of deep recession. He further said that in no way can austerity be the cure for recession. Therefore, the immediate and socially fair reversal of the downward trend of Greece's economy is imperative. Tsipras stressed the need for economic and social stability to be secured in Greece and noted that for this purpose "we must undertake every possible political initiative to reverse austerity and recession." He went on to say that apart from the lack of democratic legalisation, the continuation of the implementation of the internal devaluation programme leads the economy to ruin, without creating preconditions for recovery, adding that the internal devaluation tends to lead to a humanitarian crisis. Consequently, Tsipras concluded, "we must reconsider the entire framework of the existing strategy, given that it is not only threatening social cohesion and stability in Greece, but also constitutes a source of instability for the European Union itself and the eurozone." |
