The Advent Of Beijing Lebensraum: Chinese Tycoon Plans To Buy 0.3% Of Iceland

Over the past decade China has been stuck in an inventory stockpiling and mercantilist process tolling mode, even as it has been posturing about expanding its middle class. Well, the Chinese empire may be finally hinting at what the "next steps" may be. FT reports that Chinese real estate tycoon and former Chinese Central Propaganda Department official Huang Nubo, has struck a deal to acquire 300 square kilometers of "wilderness in north-east Iceland where he plans to build an eco-tourism resort and golf course." That, at least, is the party line. Nobody however is buying it: "Opponents have questioned why such a large amount of land – equal to about 0.3 per cent of Iceland’s total area – is needed to build a hotel. They warned that the project could provide cover for China’s geopolitical interests in the Atlantic island nation and Nato member." And after securing a landing area equidistant from Europe and the US, China will next proceed to purchase bits and pieces of Greece, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, etc. After all, the nouveau-IMF piper ultimately always demands his price for keeping the western world ponzi alive and running for a few more months.

We are confident that imminent Chinese annexations of various Greek, and soon other, territorial interests in exchange for worthless pieces of paper, will also be predicated out of a love for nature.

And when that soundbite fails, there is always the trusty, and far more accurate, fallback: Lebensraum.

No le veo sentido. Para los chinos África está mucho más cerca, hay espacio de sobra y ya la tienen medio comprada.

Esta noticia no es más que FUD, no sé si contra el Euro o sólo contra los PIIGs.

Ahora que se van a hacer posibles rutas navieras a traves del Artico, Islandia queda justo en la ruta de los contenedores hacia Europa. Mucho mas corto que la ruta por Suez. Me parece una jugada muy buena igual tambien quieren participar en el pastel del artico, que esta por abrir.

Cuando haya una via libre permanane en el Polo Norte al menos durante el verano (ya ocurre frecuentemente), ese pedacito de tierra se va a convertir en un buena rampa de lanzamiento de productos chinos a ambos lados del atlántico. Y con el tiempo, paciencia y colonizacion, en una gran base para controlar el Atlántico Norte y susu rutas comerciales

Pues bueno, el hecho de que los chinos han comprado 300 km de montañas en Islandia sigue estando ahí. Y de lo que no hay noticias públicas es que aquí ya están comprando tierras de cultivo desde hace meses. Y en Argentina desde hace años. Así que llámame FUDer, pero este desbalance comercial nos acabará haciendo esclavos. Me juego el owned: el año que viene veremos esta noticia con España, y a Rajoy y Rubalcaba felicitándose por razones incomprensibles.

¿A estas alturas le extraña a alguien? Es una colonización consentida, pero con billetes en lugar de balas.

Montañas de papeles verdes que no sirven para nada ni tienen ningún valor real. Están deshaciéndose de ellos por todo el mundo antes de que el papel en el que están impresos sea más válido que el propio valor impreso en el billete.

Si sumamos la superficie de los locales que tienen en Ispain seguro sobrepasan esos 300km2.

Chinese tycoon Huang Nubo wants to buy up 300 square kilometres of Iceland - Shanghaiist

Real estate tycoon Huang Nubo, China's 161st richest person, is said to have struck a deal with private landowners in Iceland for a 300 square kilometre tract of land in the Grímsstadir á Fjöllum region to develop a $100 million ecotourism golf resort project.

The tract of land represents the equivalent of ten times the size of Macau, or more than a quarter of Hong Kong's land mass.

If successful in his bid, Huang would own 0.3% of the total land area of the homeland of Bjork, the irreverent Icelandic singer who rooted for Tibetan independence at her first and last concert in China three years ago.

Icelandic lawmakers, conscious of China's ambitious land acquisition around the world, are concerned that the project could act as a cover for its geopolitical interests.

Said Iceland's Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson, “It is important to raise awareness of the fact that acquisition like this isn’t legal. However, it is possible to apply for an exemption from the law and such an application hasn’t arrived on my desk yet but when it does, we will look at it carefully."

“The legislative body saw reason to limit the relocation of Icelandic land to foreign parties. We have to ask ourselves whether that limitation has become obsolete. I think not,” the minister added. “But now we face the fact that a foreign tycoon wants to buy 300 square kilometers of Icelandic land. We have to discuss it and not swallow without chewing; would we find it all right if the entire country were sold this way?”

Face it, Iceland. You need the cash, and this guy has it.
