Back to work: Biggest fall in unemployment for more than TEN years

Unemployment has fallen by 88,000 - the biggest fall in more than a decade, figures out today reveal.

At the same time, the number of people in work has increased by a similar number taking the jobless total to 2.43million.

The last quarter saw the biggest fall for more than ten years but the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance jumped by 19,600 last month to 1.49million - the highest figure for more than a year.

Economic inactivity - people not in education, employment or training - also increased, up by 39,000 in the three months to April to reach 9.37million, more than a fifth of the working age population.

Government hopes that private firms will create jobs as posts are cut in the public sector were given a boost with news that employment in the private sector increased by 104,000 in the first three months of the year to 23million.



At the same time, public sector employment fell by 24,000 to 6.1 million, and the decline would have been bigger but for the 15,000 temporary jobs created to deal with the Census.

The 88,000 fall in unemployment in the three months to April was the biggest quarterly cut since the summer of 2000.

The reduction was mainly among 16 to 24-year-olds, with unemployment in this age group being cut by 79,000 to 895,000, the lowest figure for two years.

Other data from the Office for National Statistics showed that employment increased by 80,000 to 29.2million, still 333,000 lower than the pre-recession peak in May 2008.

The number of men claiming JSA increased by 11,000 to more than a million, while 8,500 more women joined the claimant count, taking the total to 483,700, the highest figure since 1996.

Changes to lone parent income support has affected the number of women claimants.

Annual earnings increased by 1.8 per cent in the year to April, down by 0.6 per cent on the previous month, largely because of lower growth in bonuses in private firms.

Average pay was £460 a week in April, up by 1.8 per cent on a year ago.

The UK's employment rate has edged up by 0.1 per cent to 70.6 per cent, up by 0.4 per cent on a year ago.

Full-time employment increased by 49,000 in the latest quarter and by 31,000 for part-time jobs.

There were 31.3million jobs in the economy in March after a huge increase of 121,000 over the quarter.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: 'This is another encouraging set of figures and a very welcome drop in unemployment.

'It's also good news that employment is going in the right direction with half a million more people in private sector jobs compared to this time last year.

'The fall in the number of unemployed young people also means that the total is now lower than it was before the General Election.

'However, we still face a challenge to help more of the long- term unemployed into work.

'Last week I announced that the new Work Programme is now up and running and will provide tailored support for more people on benefits.'

The Government said private and voluntary sector organisations were investing £581 million up front in the biggest welfare-to- work programme this country has ever seen.

Envidio a los ingleses, fueron listos; si a Europa pero no a la vez; en la Union Europea pero a la vez con su moneda.
Un poco dentro pero un poco fuera, en la Union pero a la vez independientes.

Ojito con las cifras britanicas de desempleo. Hay mas de 5 millones de discapacitados, y se calcula que mas de la mitad son falsos: maquillaje de millones, los nuestros son aprendices. Algunos pueblos del Norte no le tienen nada que envidiar a Cadiz en cuanto a desempleo. Eso si, todo dios tiene alguna fuente de ingreso. No hay familias sin ninguna ayuda social (familias viviendo legalmente en el RU, me refiero)

Muchos de los problemas que tienen son muy parecidos a los nuestros. Una burbuja inmobiliaria de pelotas, y una tasa de endeudamiento privado a la altura de la burbuja.

La gran ventaja que tienen: solo ver al equipo de gobierno de Cameron, y un debate en el parlamento britanico... y despues ver el equivalente patrio... da ganas de pedir asilo politico en el Reino Unido inmediatamente

Normal, en ejpaña hay que mantener a todos los sectores (con mafias sindicales incluidas), que sin ayudas no serían rentables (astilleros, construcción,...etc), a costa de mandar al paro y empobrecer al resto de la población.

Sistema "QUE HAY DE LO MÍO" típico ejpañol que nos llevará a la ruina total, nada nuevo....

Aqui ese dinero tirado en mantener a toda la escoria que ha ido a la construccion, y alli en otros menesteres... Eso si, aqui para lo que no es tocho no hay ayudas ni nada. HIJOS DE ***** mereceis una soga al cuello, ratas asquerosas...

¿Realmente hay tantos discapacitados? lo que hay -además de discapacitados y otros posibles camuflajes- son 6M de empleos públicos de los que probablemente 2,5M sean pura obra social de lujo, porque Alemania con 83M de habitantes funciona con 4,7M.
Es cierto que en todas partes camuflan desempleo por diversas vías,pero la población ocupada que reporta el RU no es mala si comparamos con España, por ejemplo.
Yo creo que al final el modelo alemán para disimular paro y subempleo con contratos de bajo salario y pocas horas complementados pro subsidios y ayudas es mucho más efectivo y llega a más gente que el inglés o italiano (o francés, con la particularidad de que los suyos son funcionarios) del empleo público (caro en términos per capita y por tanto limitado en su efecto redistributivo) masivo y más bien falso/redundante especialmente a nivel municipal.
